VILT (Virtual Instructor-Led Training)

Virtual Instructor-Led Training (VILT) is live training delivered by an instructor to remote participants through video conferencing or virtual classroom platforms such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, or Webex. VILT preserves the defining feature of classroom training — real-time interaction with a trainer and peers — while removing travel costs and geographic constraints, which is why it moved from niche to mainstream during the COVID-19 pandemic and has remained a permanent fixture of corporate learning since. Effective VILT is not simply a lecture over a webcam: it requires deliberate redesign for the virtual format — shorter sessions, frequent interaction through polls, breakout rooms and chat, engaging visuals, and often a producer or co-host managing technology so the trainer can focus on facilitation. Compared to self-paced e-learning, VILT offers accountability and dialogue; compared to physical ILT, it scales globally but competes with everything else on a participant's screen. In blended learning designs, VILT typically handles discussion, practice, and Q&A while pre-work is delivered as e-learning. From an administration standpoint, VILT sessions are scheduled and tracked like ILT — through LMS or TMS session management — with attendance often captured automatically via platform integrations.
