A Learning Experience Platform (LXP) is a learner-centric software platform that aggregates learning content from multiple sources and uses AI-driven recommendations to help employees discover relevant skills development opportunities on their own. While a traditional LMS is administrator-driven — courses are assigned top-down and completion is tracked for compliance — an LXP works more like a content streaming service: it curates articles, videos, podcasts, and courses based on a user's role, skills, and interests. Typical LXP features include personalized content feeds, skill tagging, social learning (comments, sharing, user-generated content), and integrations with external content libraries. LXPs became popular as organizations shifted from mandatory training toward continuous, self-directed learning cultures. In practice, the line between LMS and LXP is blurring: many modern learning platforms combine structured course management with experience-driven discovery. When deciding between the two, the practical question is whether the priority is tracking and certifying formal training (LMS strength) or driving voluntary engagement and skills growth (LXP strength). Many enterprises run both, connected through shared learner records.
