Microlearning

Microlearning is a training approach that delivers content in short, focused units — typically two to ten minutes — each targeting a single learning objective. Formats include short videos, quizzes, flashcards, infographics, and brief interactive modules, usually optimized for mobile and consumed in the flow of work rather than in dedicated training blocks. The case for microlearning rests on well-established evidence about attention and memory: learners retain more from spaced, focused doses than from long one-off sessions, and short units enable spaced repetition, which measurably improves long-term retention. Microlearning fits particular use cases exceptionally well — reinforcement after formal training, compliance refreshers, product updates for sales teams, and just-in-time performance support. Its limits are equally important: complex skills, deep conceptual understanding, and behavior change cannot be built from fragments alone, so microlearning works best as a component of a blended strategy rather than a wholesale replacement for structured courses. From a platform perspective, effective microlearning requires an LMS that supports short content formats, mobile delivery, push notifications, and spaced scheduling. It is one of the most searched L&D concepts of the past decade, reflecting the broader shift toward learning integrated into daily work.
