ILT (Instructor-Led Training)

Instructor-Led Training (ILT) is training delivered live by a trainer or facilitator to a group of learners, traditionally in a physical classroom. Despite decades of e-learning growth, ILT remains a core component of corporate training because it does things self-paced content cannot: real-time interaction, discussion, role-play, immediate feedback, and the social dynamics that drive engagement in leadership development, sales training, and complex skill-building. The trade-offs are equally clear — ILT is expensive to scale (trainer time, travel, venues), hard to schedule across distributed teams, and inconsistent in quality between sessions. Modern L&D practice rarely treats ILT and e-learning as competitors; blended learning combines them, using digital modules for knowledge transfer and live sessions for practice and application. From a systems perspective, ILT introduces specific management needs: session scheduling, enrollment and waitlists, attendance tracking, trainer and room logistics, and feeding attendance into the learner's overall training record. This is handled either by an LMS with strong ILT management features or by a dedicated Training Management System (TMS). The virtual equivalent, VILT, applies the same format through webinar and video-conferencing platforms.
