CPD (Continuing Professional Development)

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is the ongoing, documented process by which professionals maintain, update, and expand their knowledge and skills throughout their careers. CPD covers structured activities (courses, conferences, certifications), self-directed learning (reading, research), and experiential learning (mentoring, new project responsibilities). In many regulated professions — accounting, law, medicine, engineering, financial services — CPD is mandatory: professional bodies require members to complete and document a defined number of CPD hours or points per year to retain their license or designation, and can audit those records. This makes CPD tracking a concrete operational requirement, not just a development philosophy. For employers, supporting CPD serves both compliance and retention: organizations in regulated industries must ensure certified staff stay current, and development opportunities consistently rank among top drivers of employee retention. From a systems perspective, CPD management is a common LMS use case — recording internal and external learning activities, attaching certificates, tracking points against annual requirements, sending expiry reminders, and producing audit-ready reports per employee. The related US term is CEU (Continuing Education Unit), a standardized credit measure; CPD is the broader concept and the dominant term in the UK, EU, and Commonwealth markets.
