CEU (Continuing Education Unit)

A Continuing Education Unit (CEU) is a standardized measure of participation in accredited continuing education, where one CEU equals ten contact hours of instruction in a qualified program. The CEU standard is maintained by IACET (International Accreditors for Continuing Education and Training) in the United States, and only providers accredited to the relevant standard can award official CEUs. The unit exists to make continuing education comparable and verifiable across providers: professions that require license holders to keep learning — nursing, teaching, engineering, HR, financial services — express their renewal requirements in CEUs or equivalent credit hours, and professionals must document earned units to maintain certification. Related credit systems include CPE (Continuing Professional Education, used in accounting), CME (Continuing Medical Education), and professional recertification credits such as SHRM PDCs or HRCI credits in the HR field. For training providers, the ability to award recognized CEUs is a market advantage that requires accreditation and rigorous program documentation. For employers and LMS administrators, the practical task is tracking: recording credit-bearing activities, storing certificates, monitoring each employee's progress toward renewal requirements, and generating evidence for audits — a standard capability requirement in LMS selection for regulated industries.
