cmi5

cmi5 is a modern e-learning interoperability specification that defines how LMS-launched courses use xAPI, effectively combining the structured course management of SCORM with the flexible, detailed tracking of the Experience API. Published by ADL in 2016, cmi5 was designed as the official successor to both SCORM and AICC. It specifies how a course package is imported into an LMS, how the learner is launched into the content, how sessions are authorized, and which xAPI statements the content must send — creating plug-and-play compatibility that pure xAPI lacks. Compared to SCORM, cmi5 offers several practical advantages: content can be hosted anywhere (including content delivery networks outside the LMS), it works on mobile devices and offline scenarios, it captures unlimited additional data through xAPI statements, and it distinguishes between 'passed', 'completed', and other result states more precisely. Adoption has been slower than the specification deserves — SCORM's enormous installed base keeps it dominant — but cmi5 support is increasingly listed as a requirement in LMS procurement, particularly in government, defense, and large enterprises planning long-term learning analytics strategies.
