TMS (Training Management System)

A Training Management System (TMS) is software designed to manage the operational and administrative side of training, particularly instructor-led training (ILT) and blended programs: scheduling sessions, booking trainers and rooms, managing registrations, tracking budgets, and handling invoicing. While an LMS focuses on delivering digital learning content to learners, a TMS focuses on the logistics behind the training business — which is why it is most common in training companies, academies, and enterprise L&D departments that run large volumes of classroom or virtual classroom sessions. Typical TMS features include course catalogs with session calendars, waitlist management, trainer resource planning, cost tracking, and automated communication with participants (confirmations, reminders, certificates). In corporate environments, a TMS often integrates with an LMS: the LMS delivers and tracks e-learning, while the TMS orchestrates live events, and both feed a unified training record. The distinction matters during software selection: organizations that primarily need to schedule and administer live training are often better served by TMS functionality than by a content-centric LMS alone, and vice versa.
