LTI (Learning Tools Interoperability)

LTI (Learning Tools Interoperability) is a standard developed by 1EdTech (formerly IMS Global) that allows external learning tools and content providers to plug into a learning platform through a secure, standardized connection. In practice, LTI lets a learner click a link inside their LMS and be seamlessly signed into a third-party tool — a video platform, assessment engine, virtual lab, or publisher's course library — without a separate login, while grades and activity data flow back to the platform. LTI is the dominant integration standard in higher education, where universities connect dozens of tools to systems like Moodle, Canvas, or Blackboard; the current version, LTI 1.3 with LTI Advantage, added modern OAuth2-based security and richer services for rosters and grade return. In corporate learning, LTI is less ubiquitous than SCORM or xAPI but increasingly relevant as companies assemble learning ecosystems from specialized tools rather than relying on a single monolithic platform. For buyers, LTI support signals that a platform can integrate external content and tools cleanly — reducing vendor lock-in and avoiding fragile custom integrations.
